Navigating Menopause With Confidence

Herbody Clinic · 8 min read · Hormones & Wellbeing

"Menopause isn't the end, and it definitely doesn't have to feel like it's all downhill from here. It's simply the beginning of a new chapter, one you deserve to navigate with knowledge, support and confidence."

Menopause is a natural biological milestone that marks the end of your menstrual cycles and your years of fertility. Most women reach it somewhere between 45 and 55, with the average age in countries like Australia sitting around 51 to 52. It is officially confirmed once you have gone a full 12 months without a period.

But menopause rarely arrives without warning. Most women spend several years beforehand in perimenopause, the transition phase where hormone levels rise and fall unpredictably before settling into their new normal. For some, this transition brings only mild disruption. For others, it reshapes daily life, sleep, mood, relationships and sense of self. Both experiences are valid, and neither has to be faced without support.

What is actually happening in your body
Menopause is caused by your ovaries gradually producing less oestrogen and progesterone, which affects far more than your reproductive cycle.

Oestrogen receptors exist throughout the body, in your skin, bones, brain, joints, bladder and cardiovascular system, which is why the symptoms of menopause can feel so wide-ranging.

It is a normal life transition, not something broken that needs fixing. Support is about restoring balance, not fighting your biology.

Section 01

Understanding the stages

Menopause is not a single event but a gradual transition made up of three distinct stages, and knowing where you sit within them can make the experience feel far less confusing.

PerimenopauseThe lead-up to your final period, often starting in your mid-to-late 40s and lasting four years or more. Cycles become irregular, hormones fluctuate, and this is when many symptoms first appear.

MenopauseThe point in time confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period, usually around age 51 to 52. Unlike the other stages, this is a single defined moment rather than a phase you live in.

PostmenopauseEverything after that point, for the rest of your life. Many symptoms ease with time, though some, particularly those affecting bone, heart and vaginal health, can continue for years and benefit from ongoing care.

Section 02

Recognising the signs

Every woman's experience of menopause is different. Some sail through with barely a disruption, while others find it significantly reshapes daily life. Hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness are the symptoms most consistently linked to declining oestrogen, but many women notice changes well beyond that.

Hot flushes & night sweats

Sleep disturbances

Mood changes & irritability

Brain fog & memory changes

Weight & body composition shifts

Joint & muscle discomfort

Vaginal dryness

Reduced libido

Hair & skin changes

Research consistently finds joint and muscle discomfort among the most commonly reported symptoms during the menopausal transition, alongside sleep and mood changes, so if your joints have started aching more than they used to, you are far from alone.

You may notice symptoms for years before menopause is confirmed

Some women experience changes for up to a decade before their final period. That long, unpredictable build-up is exactly why perimenopause can feel so disorientating, and why early support matters just as much as support after the fact.

Section 03

Why this happens

As you move through your 40s, the number of egg-containing follicles in your ovaries naturally declines. With fewer follicles, oestrogen production drops and becomes erratic before settling at a much lower baseline. This hormonal shift disrupts the finely tuned communication between your brain and ovaries, which is what drives irregular cycles, hot flushes and many of the other symptoms women notice.

Timing varies. Most women reach natural menopause between 45 and 56, though around 1 in 20 experience it earlier, between 40 and 45, and a smaller number go through it before 40 due to primary ovarian insufficiency. Genetics, smoking, and certain medical treatments such as chemotherapy or ovary removal can all influence when it happens, so there is no single "normal" timeline.

Section 04

You are not alone in this

Menopause affects roughly half the world's population at some point, yet for a long time it was rarely discussed openly. That is changing. Public figures like Shania Twain, Salma Hayek and Drew Barrymore have spoken candidly about their own experiences, helping to loosen the silence that has surrounded this stage of life for generations.

Globally, women aged 50 and over now make up more than a quarter of all women and girls, a share that continues to grow as life expectancy rises. That means more of us than ever are moving through this transition, and more of us are talking about it, sharing what has helped, and giving each other permission to ask for support instead of quietly pushing through.

A note on symptoms and self-blame

It is easy to attribute every new ache, mood shift or bad night's sleep to menopause once you know it is happening. Most of that is a genuine part of the transition, but not everything is, and some symptoms deserve their own proper check-up rather than being written off as "just menopause". If something feels new, severe or out of character, it is always worth getting checked.

How Herbody Clinic approaches treatment

We believe managing menopausal symptoms works best with a holistic approach that looks at healing from the inside out. By combining lifestyle-focused, whole-body support with science-backed clinical treatments, our aim is lasting relief rather than short-term fixes.

Every plan starts with genuinely understanding you, not applying a generic protocol. From there, we build a personalised path that supports your hormones, your body composition and your overall sense of wellbeing.

  • 1

    Initial consultation

We take the time to understand your history, symptoms and goals before recommending anything. No two women move through menopause the same way, and your care should reflect that.

  • 2

    Personalised plan

We assess your hormone profile, lifestyle and over-all health to build a protocol that supports your body from within rather than just masking symptoms.

  • 3

    Clinical treatments

Alongside your personalised plan, we offer targeted treatments including Her 6-Week Bounce Back™, Lymphatic Therapy and EMS Therapy to support body composition, muscle health and natural weight management through menopause.

  • 4

    Ongoing support

Your journey does not end after the first session. We stay with you, adjusting your plan as your body changes and your needs evolve.

Section 06

Our featured clinical treatments

Based on what your body needs, we may recommend one or more of the following approaches, each designed to work with your body at its current stage rather than against it.

Featured Programme

Her 6-Week Bounce Back™

A non-invasive, medical-grade programme built for the things women are often told to just live with: bloating, a soft lower belly, low energy, weak bladder control and stubborn weight that will not shift. One session a week, six weeks, no downtime.

Curious what it actually involves? Book a consultation to find out if it's right for you.

Section 07

When to seek medical advice

Please speak with your GP or a qualified health professional if you experience bleeding after menopause has been confirmed, unusually heavy or prolonged bleeding during perimenopause, severe mood changes, chest pain, or symptoms that are new, severe or getting worse. Hormone therapy and other medical treatments can also be discussed with your doctor if lifestyle and support are not enough on their own.

Herbody Clinic can support many women through the hormonal, body composition and wellbeing changes of menopause, but medical symptoms should always be assessed properly first.
